On March 13, 2025, in celebration of World Kidney Day, the Hellenic Nephrology Nursing Association (HENNA) successfully organized a highly informative webinar as part of the global campaign for the prevention of chronic kidney disease. With the theme "Are Your Kidneys Healthy?", the event focused on the safe use of nuclear medicine in patients undergoing extracorporeal dialysis.

The webinar, which took place at 4:00 PM, featured esteemed speakers:
  • Dr. Ioannis Koutsikos, Nuclear Medicine Physician, Director of the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine Center, Errikos Dunant Hospital
  • George Thiveos, Medical Physicist, Errikos Dunant Hospital
  • Maria Karamanou, Deputy Head Nurse of the Dialysis Unit, Errikos Dunant Hospital
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of a treatment protocol for dialysis patients undergoing radioactive iodine therapy, offering crucial guidance for clinical practice. The protocol will be made available to all Dialysis Units and published on the HENNA’s website.

The webinar, coordinated by Panagiota Tsougia, President of HENNA, and Despina Kontouli, Deputy Director of Nursing at Errikos Dunant Hospital and Vice President of HENNA, attracted a wide audience of nephrologists, nurses, and healthcare professionals from the nephrology community.

The discussions provided valuable insights into the therapeutic application of nuclear medicine in nephrology, addressing concerns about radiation safety and best practices for dialysis patients undergoing nuclear medicine procedures. The event successfully clarified key issues surrounding the safe administration of radioactive iodine, offering evidence-based solutions for healthcare providers.

The Hellenic Nephrology Nursing Association extends its heartfelt gratitude to the distinguished speakers for their enthusiastic participation and invaluable contributions. Their expertise played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this significant scientific event.

EDTNA/ERCA Webinar in Greek: World Kidney Day
March 14, 2024
The Greek webinar on World Kidney Day, spearheaded by Dr.Petsios, Assistant Professor at the Nursing School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, served as a pivotal platform for advancing dialogue and action around this year's theme "Advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice." Against the backdrop of global health disparities, Dr.Petsios' compelling presentation delved into the multifaceted challenges facing individuals with kidney-related conditions, particularly in accessing high-quality care and optimal medication management.

With a wealth of expertise in research, Dr.Petsios adeptly navigated through the intricate landscape of kidney health, addressing not only clinical aspects but also cultural and socio-economic factors that often exacerbate disparities in healthcare access. By shining a spotlight on the critical intersection of equity, access, and medication practices, he underscored the urgent need for systemic reforms and innovative strategies to ensure that every individual receives timely and equitable care, regardless of their socio-economic status or geographic location.

Moreover, Dr.Petsios' emphasis on optimal medication practices underscored the pivotal role of nursing professionals in advocating for continuous education and trainings, evidence-based interventions and personalized treatment approaches. Through his insightful analysis and practical recommendations, he empowered attendees to champion initiatives aimed at enhancing medication adherence, minimizing disparities in access to essential medications, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize patient outcomes.

As the webinar concluded, attendees were not only enlightened but also inspired to take concrete steps towards advancing kidney health equity in their respective spheres of influence.
