Kidneys Are Silent, But We Are Not

Students and faculty from the Dialysis Nursing course at Amasya University Faculty of Health Sciences celebrated World Kidney Day with a special awareness event. Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Eylem Topbaş, course coordinator and EDTNA/ERCA Turkey Representative, the students organized the “Kidneys Are Silent, But We Are Not” initiative.

During the event, students highlighted ways to protect kidney health, emphasizing the importance of preventing diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, as well as moderating salt intake and avoiding tobacco and alcohol. They also stressed avoiding unnecessary medications, using natural products responsibly, and maintaining adequate water intake. Participants were reminded that protecting the environment and clean water sources is critical for kidney health, and that access to clean water is a universal right. Students conveyed that safeguarding kidney health is closely linked to caring for and being mindful of our environment.

To symbolize nature and water, participants wore green 💚, blue 💙, and brown 🤎 clothing and performed an AI-assisted awareness song together. They also displayed a poster titled “Our Planet, Our Kidneys”, emphasizing the importance of inter-institutional collaboration and protecting nature, water, and kidneys.

In a video prepared for the occasion, Tülay AKSOY, President of the Turkish Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation Nurses Association, delivered a message: “World Kidney Day is celebrated every year on the second Thursday of March. This year’s theme reminds us of an important truth: Healthy kidneys require a healthy environment.”

President Aksoy expressed her satisfaction in seeing the students use videos and posters to highlight inter-institutional collaboration and raise environmental awareness, contributing to the education of the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Topbaş, also extended his thanks to the faculty members who supported the event and to all students who contributed to the videos and activities.
