SUSTAINABILITY AT THE 53RD EDTNA/ERCA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
At EDTNA/ERCA, we recognize the importance of sustainability in every aspect of our work. The EDTNA/ERCA is the first of the renal associations that took up the challenge of green direction in nephrology units, making “Green” approach a priority. That’s why we are committed to making our conference in Porto as eco-friendly as possible. Through mindful planning and small but impactful changes, we aim to reduce our environmental footprint while providing a great experience for our delegates.

Our Green Initiatives
To ensure a more sustainable event, we are implementing several eco-conscious measures:
  • Sustainable Conference Materials – We are reducing printed materials and embracing digital solutions to minimize paper waste. For example, the Final Programme will not be printed, but can be downloaded on the conference website or found in our easy to use Conference Application.
  • Responsible Waste Management – We try to avoid using single-use products such as plastic cups, where possible. In case it’s unavoidable, recycling stations will be available throughout the venue to ensure proper waste separation. Water dispensers will be available throughout the venue, and we urge our attendees to bring a reusable cup/bottle.
  • Local Catering – Our catering choices prioritize sustainable and locally sourced ingredients, with a focus on reducing food waste.
  • Health & Well-being Activities – For our conference delegates, we organize a morning walk, promoting both personal health and a deeper connection to the environment.
  • Supporting the Local Community – We are working with local partners and suppliers to reduce transport emissions and support sustainable businesses in Porto. Think about catering services, A/V equipment, exhibition installation, lanyards, signage, etc. Next to that, we organize a Portuguese National Day.
  • Supporting our Local Colleagues – We are organizing a Portuguese National Day for Portuguese nurses and other specialists who want to participate in the conference. On Sunday October 15 there will be a dedicated hall where a special programme will be held in the Portuguese language, composed by our Scientific Board. Our aim is to provide high-level education on the subject to the local nurses and specialists community.
  • Tree Planting Initiative – To give back to the local environment, we are supporting a tree planting project in Porto, contributing to a greener future for the city.
  • Greener Accommodations – We recommend hotels close within walking distance or with easy public transport access to the conference venue, encouraging our attendees to use more sustainable travel options.

How You Can Help
Sustainability is a shared effort! Here are some ways you can contribute to making our conference greener:
  • Go Digital – Use the Conference App and digital resources instead of printing materials.
  • Choose Sustainable Transport – Walk, use public transportation, or share rides whenever possible.
  • Offset Your Carbon Footprint – If you're flying to Porto, consider carbon offset programs that support reforestation or renewable energy projects.
  • Be Mindful of Waste – Use recycling bins correctly and minimize food waste.
  • Bring a Reusable Water Bottle – Reduce waste by refilling your reusable water bottle at our water stations.
  • Support Local & Sustainable Options – When dining or shopping in Porto, consider businesses that prioritize sustainability.
By working together, we can make a real difference. Let’s create an event that is not only impactful, but also kind to our planet.

We look forward to seeing you in Porto for a sustainable and inspiring conference!
